Mentoring:
Mentoring is a structured and trusting relationship that brings young people together with caring individuals who offer guidance, support, and encouragement aimed at developing the competence and character of the mentee.
Types of Mentoring:
Responsible mentoring can occur in these forms:
• Traditional mentoring: One adult to one young person.
• Group mentoring: One adult to up to four young people.
• Team mentoring:
Several adults working with small groups of young people in which the adult to-youth ratio is not greater than 1:4. • Peer mentoring: Caring youth mentoring other youth.
• E-mentoring: Mentoring via e-mail and the Internet. Locations of Mentoring: Mentoring can take place in a wide array of settings, such as these:
• Workplace;
• School;
• Faith-based organization;
• Juvenile Corrections facility;
• Community setting;
• “Virtual community
” where e-mentoring takes place.
Below are three key roles that I've learned are important to the success of the mentor-mentee relationship.
Role 1: Consultant
The obvious role of a mentor to play. They are responsible for sharing their own business insights gained through years of real-world experience. This frees up the mentee to focus on novel issues that are unique to their business/objective.
Role 2: Counselor
Listen. Guide. In these instances, a mentor must play the role of counselor and provide guidance but not answers, enabling their mentee to figure out the right course of action individually.
Role 3: Cheerleader
Mentors should help celebrate a mentee’s successes, no matter how big or small.
Mentees should be open and honest about what they need and expect from their mentor.
At the end of the day, whether the mentor is being a consultant, counselor, or cheerleader, transparency and communication are two important aspects of a successful mentor-mentee relationship.
